Leiden's Nobel Laureates
The Nobel Prize is the most prestigious prize in science. The international award, founded by Alfred Nobel, is given yearly since 1901 for achievements in physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and for peace. In 1968, the Bank of Sweden instituted the Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.
The Nobel Laureates are announced in October every year. They receive their awards (a prize amount, a gold medal and a diploma) on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel's death.

The Nobel Prize has been awarded to a number of Leiden scholars. The form and extent of their relationship with Leiden University varies from a brief enrolment as a student (Jakobus van t Hoff), a PhD degree (Tobias Asser, Tjalling Koopmans) or a fellowship (Enrico Fermi) to a long and important relationship as a professor extraordinary (Albert Einstein) or a full professorship (Hendrik Antoon Lorentz).
